Pop sensation Justin Timberlake was apprehended in New York on charges of driving while intoxicated, local authorities confirmed to the BBC.

The arrest occurred on Tuesday morning, with the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office issuing a formal statement regarding the incident. They refrained from disclosing additional details at this time.

Timberlake, 43, was detained in Sag Harbor, a luxurious village nestled in the Hamptons, a favorite summer retreat for celebrities on Long Island. Following his arrest and formal charge, he was released without bail, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.

The BBC has reached out to Timberlake’s legal representative for comment.

Timberlake, who was preparing to launch a global tour for his sixth album, “Everything I Thought It Was,” has a storied career as a former member of the iconic boy band NSYNC. Beyond his musical endeavors, he is also a renowned actor, songwriter, and one of the world’s top-selling music artists.

In previous interviews, Timberlake has candidly discussed his struggles with excessive drinking and his efforts to seek help.

In New York, driving while intoxicated carries severe penalties, including up to one year in jail, a $1,000 (£786) fine, and a mandatory suspension of the driver’s license for at least six months.

Timberlake was slated to perform two concerts in Chicago this weekend, followed by a show at New York’s Madison Square Garden next Tuesday.

The 10-time Grammy winner also boasts notable film roles, including parts in “The Social Network” and “Friends With Benefits.” Timberlake is married to actress Jessica Biel, and together, they have two children.
