Inter Miami fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Lionel Messi, the club’s marquee signing, is on track to return from a right hamstring strain after missing their recent Concacaf Champions Cup match against Nashville SC.
According to Inter Miami manager Gerardo Martino, Messi suffered “muscle overload” during the game and was subbed out as a precaution. He underwent scans, and while the extent of the injury wasn’t severe, the club opted for caution to avoid any setbacks.
“Leo is recovering well,” Martino told reporters. “The scans came back positive, and it’s nothing major. We expect him to be back in training soon and available for our next MLS game.”
That next game is against DC United on March 20th, giving Messi a full week to recover and regain full fitness. His return will be a welcome boost for Inter Miami, who are currently second in the Eastern Conference standings.
Prior to the injury, Messi had started Inter Miami’s last pre-season friendly and played nearly an hour in their Champions Cup first leg. While he hasn’t yet lit up MLS with a goal explosion, his presence and creative influence on the team’s play have been undeniable.
Inter Miami fans will be eager to see Messi back on the pitch, leading their charge for a strong showing in their inaugural MLS season.
